Raven-Symoné Tells Oprah She’s Not African American

Raven-Symoné appeared last night on Where Are They Now and was interviewed by Oprah Winfrey. In this clip from the interview, Oprah asked Raven was she a lesbian. Even though Raven lives a private life, she opened up and told Oprah the truth. Then again, why would you want to lie to The Big O? While answering Raven said that she was tired of labels including being African-American! Oh you know Oprah warned her and Raven still went on! Get into this mess!

Yes we all get tired of labels at some point in life. We must remember that it is not a label, its a characteristic that makes us who we are! I cringed watching Raven denounce herself as an African-American. She opened up a can of worms by saying that. Just because you don’t know all the details of your family history, it does not mean you act like it never existed. Most African-Americans don’t know what African country their from, but there are DNA tests that you can take to find out! I love Raven but she trrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrried it!

I dont think people truly understood what she said. Those that agree. This new mentality that we don’t have to “identify” with any one thing is the reason why we’re a lost group of people now. A group with no connection with their roots statistically remain confused. What is an “AMERICAN”? Are you kidding me?! You want to be connected to this country that still doesn’t consider us as equals? Im so disappointed. Self identity is normal. Forget all this ridiculous ” I dont want to be labeled” nonsense. You’re of African decent, you’re a WOMAN and you’re GAY. Nothing wrong with any of those!! Get a grip.

Well there you have it! Many people agree with what she said. Its not that she is denying having the dna of an African, she recognises the politics of the label .She just wants to be human and not have to deal with the politics labels bring

I think the only reason she did not want to be identified as gay is because of the negative connotations that come with it. My interpretation of what she was trying to say was you have to look past the labels that society may have because everyone is so diverse.

People who still have a segregated and disclosed mind set when it comes to race won’t understand what Raven tried to articulate. We all need to look past our skin color (not our culture). Culture & Race two different things. The only way we can evolve as a people is to break down the barriers we limit ourselves too. Certain black people won’t understand this.
